Overview

General Motors Corporation is a multinational American-based car manufacturer that is headquartered in Michigan. GM is one of world’s largest automakers and employs more than 200,000 people around the world. Since the early 1900s when it first began producing cars, it has created a well-respected name for itself. General Motors is the number one automaker in the world, considering overall sales.

GM now produces cars and trucks in 31 countries under the brand names of: Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, and Buick in the US. In recent years, the company has been in financial difficulty and has made significant changes in its organization. The restructuring of GM due to financial difficulties has allowed the company to continue to produce high-quality, safe, and fuel-efficient cars. With this re-structuring, there are four divisions in the US on which GM will focus its manufacturing: Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC. These brands all provide a  great selection of models to meet consumers’ needs.

GM has participated in motorsport all over the world for years including the World Touring Car Championship, the Indy, and NASCAR. Currently the Chevrolet Impala is GM’s only entry in NASCAR.  However, in the past, the Buick Regal, Oldsmobile Cutlass, Pontiac Grand Prix and Chevrolet Monte Carlo have all been entered. GM is the leader of races won in the premier racing series for NASCAR out of all automobile manufacturers. For GM auto racing, GM has also made significant developments in electronics.

Chevrolet Corvette – the Corvette is currently in its sixth generation. It was first produced in the 1950s as a convertible and has undergone significant changes over the years as technology has advanced. The Corvette is currently built in Kentucky and is considered to be the official sports car of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The next generation of the Corvette is planned for 2013, with the 2014 model year. GM has been in the planning stages for this generation since 2007 and it’s expected that this new generation will bring about changes that will be very apparent.

GM is a leader in the car manufacturing industry. Through the many brands they sell, GM covers a wide variety of vehicles for any consumer. GM is also a highly recognized company in the motorsport world. As with any company, it has had its financial challenges but it still remains an industry leader today.
